We have a saying in dentistry, “the best dentistry is no dentistry at all” . What that really means is, the more conservative we can be in treating teeth, the better.
Sometimes, people may have teeth that are misshapen, severely discolored or malaligned (crooked). Ideally, these teeth can be recontoured to a desired shape , whitened to an acceptable color or properly aligned with braces. Unfortunately, sometimes, the ideal treatment is not option. This could be due to the fact that the teeth might be too severely misshapen, the color too dark or the patient might not want to wait the extended period of time that orthodontic treatment would require.
Fortunately, there is a conservative option called porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers cover the front of the teeth with a thin layer of porcelain. These can be done with the need to remove little to no tooth structure.
The teeth are prepared, impressions are made and sent to the laboratory, and temporary veneers are placed on the teeth until the next visit. When the patient returns, the temporaries are removed, the porcelain veneers are bonded to the teeth and the patient leaves with a beautiful new smile.
I can’t tell you how many times a dramatic change has been made in a person’s life with even just a small enhancement in someone’s smile, let alone a big enhancement.
I remember my first veneer case. The patient was a young woman in her twenties and she had very gray teeth due to tetracycline staining. I did six veneers on her upper front teeth and when I saw the patients mother a few days later, she told me that her daughter has not stopped smiling since she left my office.
Another case I remember was a young, mother of two. I opened the door to the back of the building and when I greeted her, she covered her mouth with her hand because she was so embarrassed of her smile. When we finished the treatment and I sat her up to see her new smile, she took one look in the mirror and started crying (tears came to my eyes as well).
Check out this amazing result with 10 veneers.
If you are looking to enhance your smile, try to choose the most conservative option available and if course follow the opinion of a trusted dentist.
Keep smiling!
