That’s what my patient told me, that I changed his life. While I was flattered, I asked him what he meant. I will tell you, however, a little background is required first.
A friend of mine called me to tell me that he had a friend who needed my help. He told me that his friend was down on his luck and needed some major dental work. When the patient came in to the office we sat and discussed his situation. He was 45 years old at the time, a teacher and a public speaker and he just had all of his teeth extracted. He told me that he was in between jobs and too embarrassed to go on job interviews. I made upper and lower full dentures for him and he was able to smile again. The problem was, he said, that while the dentures stayed in place, he was worried that they would fall out while he was speaking in front of a crowd.
I then placed four implants on the upper arch and four on the lower arch. The dentures snapped into the implants and there was no chance of them falling out.
With his newly restored confidence he began his interview process and found himself a job and several speaking engagements. He returned to me and told me “you changed my life. I now have the confidence to speak in front of a crowd and nobody knows I have dentures. Thank you!” One big hug later I choked out “you’re welcome, it was my pleasure.”
It’s not every day that you get to change someone’s life for the better.
Yours Flossfully,
David Schlussel, DDS
